A pregnant elephant had strayed over from the forested area meant for elephant conservation in Kerala as it was hungry and went in search of food. Aware that she was trusting of humans, some locals had fed her a pineapple stuffed with firecrackers. These had exploded in her mouth and left her in searing pain as her mouth had become mutilated. She had gone to hide away, eventually finding her way into the river. Her rangers found her there. In his facebook post, the ranger wrote that she had probably dunked her mouth in to get some relief from the pain. She had also disallowed the rangers and their captive elephants to rescue her. She had died standing in the river, also in extreme starvation as she could not eat.

In another disturbing case that followed a few days after, locals were seen throwing fire bombs at a mother elephant and her calf, both of which had come in search of food to the village.

While many may argue that elephants in India are dangerous pests that have trampled people and homes, these two cases involved mother elephants who intended no such harm and did no such harm even after getting attacked by the locals, they were merely looking for food and most importantly, were trusting of humans. Maya’s Macarons heavily condemns these acts of cruelty, especially unjustified attempts to kill tame and harmless animals.
In yet another horrific case, a cow was fed with a dough ball laced with firecrackers. The cow was someone’s pet and not wild or being raised for meat. WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGE

While this animal was able to receive veterinary attention quickly, its quality of life is forever altered because it will no longer be able to eat. According to her owner, she is being injected with glucose to keep her going daily.
Thankfully, the perpetrators for all these cases have been apprehended. These stories have sparked massive outcry even among celebrities after the stories went viral.
Lacing fruit or dough with firecrackers is an illegal method created by farmers to keep pest animals off their crops. While their reasoning is valid, their methods are cruel, sick and actually illegal. We at Maya’s Macarons hope that more can be done to step up with preventing animal cruelty in India. As cows and elephants are revered in India, we express our disappointment at the treatment of these animals, and so many cases happening days after each other is deeply troubling. (END)
